It absorbed wood anatomy's cellular knowledge as a prerequisite: understanding grain direction and growth rings was essential for interpreting test results. But the new framework narrowed the field's focus. Where anatomy had celebrated the diversity of species, mechanics sought universal grading rules that could apply across woods. The result was a set of design values that allowed timber to compete with steel and concrete in construction. Wood mechanics did not reject anatomy; it repurposed it as infrastructure for a predictive science. After World War II, a new pressure emerged: the pulp and paper industry needed to understand wood not as a solid structure but as a chemical feedstock. Wood Chemistry turned the field's attention from the cellular to the molecular. Researchers identified the three major polymers—cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin—and learned how to separate them. This framework replaced the mechanical engineer's concern with bulk properties with a focus on chemical composition and reactivity. Wood chemistry did not eliminate its predecessors; it coexisted with them by addressing a different question. The anatomist's cell types and the engineer's strength values remained relevant for solid-wood applications, but the chemist's knowledge of molecular structure opened entirely new industrial pathways: pulping, bleaching, and the production of paper, rayon, and chemical derivatives. Wood chemistry also laid the molecular foundation for everything that followed. Without the ability to isolate and characterize cellulose, the later frameworks of composites and nanocellulose would have been impossible.
By the 1970s, a new insight was taking hold: wood did not have to be used in its natural form. The most recent framework, Nanocellulose and Bio-based Materials, emerged around the turn of the millennium as a radical extension of the composite idea. If composites treated wood as a designable input, nanocellulose research pushed that logic to its extreme: isolate the fundamental building blocks—cellulose nanofibrils and nanocrystals—and reassemble them into entirely new materials with unprecedented properties. This framework is a direct descendant of wood chemistry, which provided the methods for isolating cellulose, but it goes further by engineering at the nanoscale. Nanocellulose materials can be stronger than steel, lighter than glass, and transparent; they can form films, gels, foams, and aerogels. The framework is closely tied to the bioeconomy narrative, promising renewable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics and composites. It coexists with the composites framework, but the two are in tension. Composites are optimized for bulk production at low cost; nanocellulose research targets high-value, high-performance applications. Their disagreement is not about goals—both seek to use wood more efficiently—but about scale and method. Composites accept the wood fiber as it is; nanocellulose refines it to the molecular limit.
Today, wood science is a field of living frameworks that coexist by addressing different parts of the material's potential. Wood anatomy remains essential for species identification in trade, forensics, and archaeology—a quiet infrastructure that the other frameworks rely on. Wood mechanics and timber engineering continue to provide the design values that underpin modern timber construction, from skyscrapers to bridges. Wood chemistry persists in the pulp and paper industry and as the molecular foundation for the newer frameworks. The two active frameworks—composites and nanocellulose—dominate research funding and industrial attention. They agree on a core principle: wood is not a fixed material but a feedstock that can be engineered. They disagree on what counts as progress. The composites community prizes cost-effective, scalable manufacturing of uniform products. The nanocellulose community prizes purity, performance, and the creation of entirely new material classes. This division of labor is likely to persist, with composites supplying the bulk of the forest products economy and nanocellulose opening niche markets in biomedical materials, electronics, and high-performance packaging. The older frameworks have not been replaced; they have been absorbed, narrowed, and repurposed as the field's understanding of wood has deepened from the cellular to the molecular to the nanoscale.
