THE NOUSFARER FIELD GUIDE

Your Palace Ship

The rooms of your palace ship and what each station does: the throne, the Tree of Knowledge, the Copilot, the museum, the dressing room and the Ethos Atlas.

Your ship is a Byzantine palace that sails through space. It is where every voyage starts and ends: you plan expeditions here, set course, change your look and show the artworks you collect. Walk up to a station and press E (or tap its gold plaque) to use it.

The throne room

The palace's throne room seen past the captain: the throne under its golden Tree of Knowledge on a round dais, porphyry columns, pictures in stone on the walls and a mosaic floor.
The throne room: the throne is the helm.

The domed room at the bow is the ship’s bridge.

  • The throne is the helm. Sit on it to open the astrolabe and chart a course; when an expedition is under way it opens turned to your next planet, with the route lit in gold. See The Astrolabe & Voyages.
  • The Tree of Knowledge, the gilded tree beside the throne, opens the same astrolabe: its branches are the galaxies of knowledge.
  • The Copilot, the owl on its perch in the side alcove, plans expeditions with you. See Copilot & Expeditions.

The Corridor of Giants

The Corridor of Giants: a long hall under a coffered vault of white marble and lapis, porphyry columns, the giants of thought in stone pictures along the walls and a Platonic solid on its pedestal.
The Corridor of Giants joins every room of the palace.

The Corridor of Giants runs from the throne room toward the stern under a coffered vault, with the five Platonic solids in their stones and the doors to the other rooms. The giants of thought hang along its walls in time order, from Plato and Aristotle to Einstein and Noether, each a picture in inlaid stone: press E at one to read about the work it shows, its idea and the life behind it. The traditions in the Council Chamber and the pictures in the bedroom open the same way.

Hypatia, the ship’s cat, lives aboard. She naps on her bed in the dressing room, follows you about when she is awake, and lets you pet her (press E near her).

The museum

The museum opens off the corridor: two round galleries joined by a crossbar.

  • The Nousdex, a great bookwheel in the crossbar, is the catalogue of every artwork in the game and of the ones you have collected.
  • The galleries hold the pedestals, the walls and the projection tables where you show your collection.

The Nousdex & Museum explains how to collect pieces and set them on show.

The dressing room

The captain in the dressing room beside the Dressing Room panel, with tabs Sets, Look and Cloaks and the Dark Explorer and Starbinder gear sets, each piece to earn.
The dressing room: your look, your cloaks and the gear you earn.

Across the corridor from the museum:

  • The mirror (the peacock triptych) changes your look: body, skin, hair and colours.
  • The wardrobe holds your cloaks and the three sets of gear, earned piece by piece by crowning Scholar’s Towers. Each tower you crown also adds a feather to your cloak, in the colours of its galaxy.

The bedroom

The Ethos Atlas: 550 Ethos recorded, galaxies charted, systems visited, planets studied and tower seals, then Classical Mechanics with its towers' progress bars and a Set course button.
The Ethos Atlas: your record across the Tree of Knowledge.

The Ethos Atlas lies open on the lectern under a sculpted waxing moon. It is your record: the galaxies, systems and planets you have studied, each tower’s seal with how many of its storeys you have mastered, and a Set course button that opens the astrolabe at that planet. Sign in to keep this record.

The Council Chamber

The round chamber with its great table is where captains will meet to test each other’s knowledge. Multiplayer trials come in a later update.
